akeyfruitbat Posted May 5, 2011 Report Posted May 5, 2011 Hi, I have got a 2001 tdi ghia galaxy with a 5 speed auto box which I have not had very long. I noticed that the gear changes were very jerky so I decided to change the box oil. The stuff that came out looked redish and slightlty darker than the new oil but a friend told me that it looked ok. My concern is that when I measured what came out it was about 6 litres. To drain the oil I removed the 24mm bolt from the bottom of the box case. I have refilled 3.5 litres which appears to be the correct amount for a refil without draining the torque converter. I just wondered if this is right and if so it would appear that the gearbox was somewhat overfilled before! Out of interest I have taken the car on a short test drive and it would seem that it shifts far smoother than before and goes up and down the gears easier. However I don't want to drive it too far in case it needs more oil and I blow it up as a result. Thanks Quote
chrispb123456 Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 Yes when you drain these boxes you only get half the fluid out, capacity is 7 litres if you got 6 litres out then it was well over the top as 3.5 litres is about right when draining, when the fluids overfilled the fluid gets very airiated. As long as you followed the correct procedure for draining/refilling should be OK. ps. which fluid did you use? akeyfruitbat Posted May 6, 2011 Author Report Posted May 6, 2011 Hi there, thanks for your reply. Hopefully I drained and refilled the box correctly following the advice I found on this site as well as guidence from a friend of mine who is a senior technician for Citroen. He got me the fluid from a local VW garage so I hope it is ok. One thing I am still not sure of is where the level plug is for this gearbox so I can't be sure the fluid level is correct. There is a 24mm drain plug bolt and a plug in cap for filling. I seem to remember the code for the box is someting like jc j07 or something like that. Any ideas? Thanks again Quote
